Sermon Notes

Proverbs is filled with nuggets of wisdom, knowledge and if you get it understanding into so many areas for our growth, protection, our success and happiness. Proverbs is filled with warning, and commands and instructions for our benefit.

Proverbs starts off with a Father writing instructions for life, health, success, and righteousness to and for his son. These are instructions from our Father to us His children to learn and grow and become who He destined and created us to be.

It is very interesting that Humility is not one of the listed Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5. Humility is one of those qualities that works its way into all of the fruits of the Spirit. All of the good qualities Jesus Believers are to posses have an element of humility within them. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control….you can’t have any of these things without HUMILITY.

Throughout the book of Proverbs, it seems every chapter has nuggets of truth regarding humility, and pride. They seem to play a role in everything good or bad described in Proverbs.

“When pride comes [boiling up with an arrogant attitude of self-importance], then come dishonor and shame, But with the humble [the teachable who have been chiseled by trial and who have learned to walk humbly with God] there is wisdom and soundness of mind.” PROVERBS 11:2 AMP

“Arrogance comes, then comes shame, but wisdom remains with humble people.” Proverbs 11:2 GW
Pride and Humility and i believe pride works so hard to overcome humility.

Pride in Hebrew a couple words are used to describe pride. The word arrogance, presumptuously, be insolent, presume.

Arrogance means—-: an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people. This view comes from an unholy source. This does not come from God or the Holy Spirit. Satan when he was an Arch Angel had this same view towards God and others.

It is an unholy view and thinking of yourself. When you think you are better, smarter, or more important than other people. This behavior will tell it all. It will come out in your speech with put downs, mean things, demeaning and demoralizing speaking and behavior. The unholy set up is when people are like this, they can’t even see it, but everyone else can.
Arrogance runs parallel with ignorance.

Pride focuses on others failures. Self-righteous, overly-critical, and fault finding. Pride looks at their life through a telescope but looks at others with a microscope. Pride looks down on those who aren’t as “spiritual” or “committed” as they are. Pride thinks they know who is truly proud and truly humble. Pride thinks everyone is privileged to have them involved.
Pride is seen in many places in the church, because it started with Satan against God. This pride caused a division and split in heaven.

Presumptuously means : too confident especially in a way that is rude : done or made without permission, right, or good reason, to go beyond what is proper. No real respect of authority.

I have had the privilege of working with a few of these people. They think they are sent here as Gods representative to fix us. I have had to deal with people who had ran very large companies and had large resources or been around Church’s a lot. This is usually where this comes from. I remember when God let us start our church over when a vast majority left He told me to build it the way He wants, not man. I had people who pushed me and twisted me and with the thoughts they would leave and take their support with them. This happens in so many church’s. The pastors don’t lead church’s for the most part anymore. Boards of directors do. When they want they fire the Pastor’s. So sad. I report to God. I have advisors but no controllers. God and I are the directors.

Satan was trying to tempt Jesus to follow his direction, worship him and not God. This spirit seeks to control and manipulate.

I have seen this spirit in church, I have seen this spirit in couples where the man is up here and the woman is lower. Where the man who has a job feels is doing more than the wife who is taking care and raising children. Working a job and running a business is nothing compared to raising children to love God and others with respect and honor. Pride is not always so visible. It hides too.

INSOLENT : rude or impolite : having or showing a lack of respect for other people.

There is a healthy pride we should have. We are the children of God, we should have a positive measure of pride in us and our work and accomplishments. It is not positive when you compare yourself with others to make yourself feel better.

Proverbs 11:2a “When pride comes [boiling up with an arrogant attitude of self-importance], then come dishonor and shame.” When pride comes the followers of pride also come dishonor and shame.

Our refrigerator went out and i bought one and I noticed after buying it, it was smaller. It worked but smaller. Yvonne did not like it but it worked. She kept asking me to get a bigger one a side by side so I said you want one you find it. She got a deal, the gentleman delivered our refrigerator and with discounted took our smaller one. Everything looked great, we had an ice machine and water hooked up. It was much larger and everything worked. Felt great, I stocked it up. Packed with food. After two days we came home and water was everywhere. The ice had melted and the refrigerator shut off. Food ruined and i kept playing with the temp dials and it came back on. Food gone, but still working. Next day it died again. A repair man comes out and fixes it or so we think. Three different times coming out. I stoped buying food. Yvonne called him and convinced him to give her, her money back but my little refrigerator he sold. He came Friday picked up the broken refrigerator. All my food is spoiled again. I did get some of my frozen food over to Chris and Falicidy’s house but not a lot. We have not had a refrigerator since really Thursday. As you can guess we were a little stressed out with each other. I was really angry. So Friday afternoon I go to my little Chinese fast food place and order some fried rice. I have a little ice chest for our juice and to have ice. I take a walk and I see this older man sitting with his little back pack of clothes and personal belongings. It is hot and he is smiling and just sitting chilling. He had a peace about him. I began to think of all that I had not on what i did not have. I might not have a refrigerator right now and having to use an ice chest but my life is so amazing. I love my wife and she loves me. I started to think how dumb to give up our peace and power over something so no worth it. My tortoise is loaded with vegetables and fruit because we do not have a refrigerator. He got strawberries, three types of grapes, lettuces two types. Our loss was his gain.

Then i humbled my self and just kept looking at my wife who tries so hard to create an environment we can flourish in. Thank you.

Humility: Gentle in mind, or circumstances, saintly, meek.
freedom from pride or arrogance : the quality or state of being humble. : the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people : the quality or state of being humble

But with the humble [the teachable who have been chiseled by trial and who have learned to walk humbly with God] there is wisdom and soundness of mind.”
PROVERBS 11:2 AMP

Humility and teachability goes hand in hand. Pride know it all. Humility is open to learn and receive. Humility has been chiseled by trials. I have gone thru so many trials and the beautiful reward is humility. I used to be so very prideful as a young man. I had success, more than most. My head was so big. God has ways of letting the air out of pride when you are His son or daughter. Trials. They are not to destroy you but to make and mold you into who He wants you to be.

I looked at the older man who was homeless. Later that day i was walking into a store and and i seen a group of homeless people standing and asking for money. I walked in and walked out and got into my car then something came over me. I got out and called this one homeless guy over who i noticed was not really getting any help. I gave him 5 dollars and spoke to him a bit about Gods Love. It was not much but it was not for him but for me. As i was getting in my car another homeless guy in a wheel chair rolls up to me and says, “That was really kind of you, God bless you.”

I am no better nor worse, just a man going thru life called to share the love of Jesus where ever i go. I remember I had nothing till Jesus came and picked up this mess and cleaned me up. He brothers life and dreams into me. Without Jesus I would be dead, prison, or just a super mess. Humility remembers. To the poor, the sick, the rich and powerful. Everyone needs Gods love and salvation. Pride causes us to not share our faith with people. Pride says what will they think of me. Pride is all about how we look.

“The reward of humility [that is, having a realistic view of one’s importance] and the [reverent, worshipful] fear of the LORD Is riches, honor, and life.”
PROVERBS 22:4 AMP

“The payoff for meekness and Fear-of- GOD is plenty and honor and a satisfying life.”
Proverbs 22:4 MSG

God’s Pay is plenty, honor and a satisfying life.

“Respecting the LORD and not being proud will bring you wealth, honor, and life.”
Proverbs 22:4 NCV
